  • The foundation raised more than $65 million toward its goal of $50 million.
  • Momentum from early leadership gifts led to greater success and larger gifts.
  • Engaged over 100 families with major gift capacity in formal, personalized campaign visits for over three years.
  • The campaign renewed a culture of philanthropy within the hospital and continues to serve as a prime example to the more than 1,500 nonprofits in Marin County of the potential for success with ambitious campaigns.

The Challenge

After the State of California passed new seismic regulations for hospitals, Marin General Hospital needed to replace two of its three inpatient wings. To fund this $535 million project, the hospital’s board of directors determined they would need to raise at least $50 million in philanthropy. Historically, the hospital’s foundation had raised a few million dollars in annual revenue, largely through events. An effort of this size would require a large, focused campaign to bring together the broader community.

The Solution

CCS began collaborating with Marin General Hospital after initial feasibility findings, stepping in to identify strengths, weaknesses, and opportunities with key supporters. CCS helped raise the scope of the campaign, which led to a focus on the case for support, strong leadership, and a wide look at which individuals, foundations, and companies in the community might support the project. The campaign was framed in a three-year timeline with a phased approach, with the great majority of time spent cultivating donors during a silent phase.

The Impact

The newly launched campaign saw early success in the form of several of the largest gifts ever to the hospital. This gave Marin General Hospital the momentum to carry its campaign beyond three years with a tremendous finish, raising more than $65 million toward its goal of $50 million. The new hospital officially opened in the fall of 2020.
